buddy's dad on skype
i've said before that the hardest part of us living here is that the kids are far, far away from our family. jose and grace LOVE their family and crave their presence in their lives. often jose will wake up and the first thing he'll say in the morning is one of their names. our loved ones are not forgotten over the miles, land and ocean that separate us.

see, there's my dad. they are northern cal, and we are in northern germany, and yet Skype makes it feel like we're sitting right there with one another. we each have a mini video camera installed in our computers, and so we get to 'talk live' face to face.

the kids REALLY think they are right there. here's jose giving papa "knucks." or he'll go right to the screen and give my mom a kiss on the cheek. grace likes to 'drink coffee' with my mom--my mom will put her coffee cup right up to the screen, and will say, "grace, want some coffee?" and grace will say "yes" and will try to take it from her. it's fun.

here are the kids giving mimi and papa "high fives." it is so cute to watch them interact with family. they sing songs over Skype, dance, read books...it is really, really cool.

they especially go nuts when they get to skype with their cousins, paige and christina--unfortunately, i forgot to take a picture last time they did it. buddy's dad coordinates it all...has the girls come over to their home around 9:00am california time so we can chat with them at 6:00pm our time. and they just sit there and talk and laugh and sing...it's great.
my parents flashing us their pretty smiles
i always think that living so far away could be worse: we could be missionaries in the jungles of the amazon or in the remote mountains of china...and if that were the case, there would be no internet, no email, no skype, no phone calls. yes, we are far away from our family and friends, but we are close in SIGHT via inventions like Skype and of course, we are always close in HEART.

however, thanks to modern technology we can bridge the gap a bit and give the kids a taste of home and family via Skype. It's a free computer program you can download that allows you to SEE and talk with those you love most. here are jose and grace having FUN with mimi and papa, my parents.
