all american?

our local market has a special promotion
a few times a year:
american week
are you curious to see what a german market sells as american? we found it entertaining. what we especially enjoyed was the brand name: Mike Mitchell--like they tried to think of the most american name they could find.
for you pleasure, we'll rate the items on a 1-10 scale

microwave popcorn: 10/10tasted great. nice and salty and buttery

bacon burger in a bag: 1/1o
they get a 1 for the thought. yes, americans like bacon burgers and they make them well. however, if you may have read on my previous posts, germans don't do hamburgers well. the u.s. definitely has the market on burgers. also, i haven't found the germans to cook bacon the way we do...the bacon is more uncooked and rubbery instead of cooked and crispy so you get a little nervous even taking a bite of it. and a microwavable, german hamburger with rubbery bacon? this reminds me of something you might find at a truck stop in one of those refrigerated turnstile things for $2. gross. don't think we bought this--wouldn't dare. just took a pic of it at the store to show you.

maple walnut cookies: 3/10

a 3 because yes, americans like cookies. a sad 3 because, well, have you ever even heard of a maple walnut cookie? not that it sounds bad--sounded good, actually--but typical american? no.... how about peanut butter cookies? that's what they look like on the box, even. then it also got a 3 because they tasted just awful. you might wonder, "how bad can a cookie taste?" fair question, and i'm not so picky with cookies. but trust me, they were so bad we had to throw them out. very disappointing. maybe they deserved a 2? 1?

peanut butter: 8/10
for this hydrogenated oil type of peanut butter it would get a 10/10 but you kinda feel guilty giving it to your kids so it gets an 8. we prefer the au natural laura scudder's or trader joe's but hey, in another country that doesn't favor pb & j...beggars can't be choosers

donuts: 4/10

donuts here are missing one item: grease. without the sugary greasiness, what is a donut? the ones we've tasted here are pretty much flavorless. the icing is waxy and i don't quite know what it's made of...and the cake part is tasteless as well. germans in general are far more health conscious than americans, so i can see why they wouldn't prefer a greasy donut...but if you're gonna do it american style, add the necessary ingredients--or call it by a different name.

also on the menu of special items at the store were hot dog buns, hamburger buns, steak, soft ice cream, pizza, popcorn shrimp, bbq sauce and bagels. in general, the american items, as you can see above, were mostly junk food items, which is pretty telling and a tad embarassing. but still, we found it interesting to see the food items they chose. hope you enjoyed your excursion to the market in hamburg--american style.

Hey, thanks for your sociological perspective of German "American" food. You should see if there is some sort of German minister of foreign food and see if he'll give you give minutes of his time. You really could help improve the American food market. Germans will love you when you help them figure out how to make a "dirty" hamburger!

At least the popcorn was good, that's a must! ;O)

It's a scam - I went to school with Mike Mitchell and he's Canadian ( not to mention also a jerk )
