Amanita muscaria

yep, that's the name of this cheery mushroom my mom spied the other day while we were taking a walk out in the countryside. she definitely gets points for spotting these beauties, and for happening to have her camera with her so we had evidence of our find.

instead of a scientific name that i don't quite know how to pronounce, i'll call it a red mushroom with white polka dots.  in german it's a Fliegenpilze, which means Fly Mushroom.

i'll tell you what i know about them other than the fact that they are really cute and have the friendliest personality of any mushroom you can find.

they are prominent in germany and every child has been told not to eat them because they are poisonous.
DO NOT EAT!

but despite the precaution, they are still beloved.  they are very popular over here. you find them in store windows everywhere.  you can buy Fliegenpilze mugs, candles, napkins, ornaments...the possibilites are endless.

are they hip in the u.s. too? i'm trying to figure out if this is just a german thing or if they are trendy everywhere right now.  our american readers need to let me know.

these darlings are often associated with children's stories and fairy tales.

hey, you can even make them into a cookie.  mmm...at least this one, you can eat!
