I can do it, yes I can!

one big difference mommy has noticed with the german kindergarten school system is that it really stresses the importance of kids learning how to become independant. you know, learning how to do things by ourselves. (note: my pals and i are between the ages of 3-6. german kindergarten = american preschool).

above is where i have breakfast and lunch with all of my pals each day but let me show you something:

see this fancy spread? this is our breakfast. and we sit like big kids, and we fix ourselves our own breakfast from whatever's on the table that day.

i butter my own bread.
i pour my own milk.

this made mommy very nervous at first because she does all of that for me at home. maybe she thought i couldn't do it? but i am a big boy now, and

i can do it, yes i can!

i especially like getting to pick my seat and sit next to whoever i want. but do you know what my favorite part is?

CLEANING UP!
i love clearing my plate and cup, and helping to clear off the table, too. it makes me feel so proud and helpful. this made mommy nervous, too. she thought i may drop my porcelain plate...but i do a great job. and you know what? i'm a kid, and if something spills or breaks, it's not the end of the world. that's how we learn. now, at home, i am acting like such a big boy. i am showing mom and dad how much i can do, and gracie, too!

after our meals at school, all the kids go and clean up and we brush our teeth.

i love being trusted with this big boy kinda stuff. mom and dad are so proud of me, and they really like how they do this type of stuff here in germany. me too.
i can do it, yes i can!

Hi Jose,
At my preschool in California we eat family style as well. Two helpers get to set the table each day and then we sit down and pass around the food and take it ourselves. We don't get to pour our own drinks because they give us milk in these plastic bags that you have to poke a straw through. Since I don't drink milk, I don't get to do that. After we eat we carry our plates to the trash and scrape off the food and put them in the bin. I like your fancy porcelin plates...ours are plastic. We don't get to brush our teeth...we just wash our hands. I like to help more at home now too but it makes my mom nervous.
