Ever Wonder...

...what we eat over here?
betcha have...
or most likely, the thought has never entered your mind
but we like food...mmmm...
and thought you might like to get a taste of germany

does this basket of glory look healthy or what?
kathleen and heather are probably
shocked at the sight of it
no offense taken, ladies :)
believe it or not, this is on our counter
and is always filled with fresh fruit and bread
the rolls we buy daily at the local bakeries
at least in our world here,
we have learned that germans go to the market
about every day or every other
they buy small and healthy
and their bodies show it

now that is not to say that everything is healthy over here
what in the world is this, you ask?
"little bear meat"
mmmm...delicious!
basically it's baloney in the shape of a bear
hey, whatever it takes to get the kids to eat
at first the kids were so excited about it,
they would shout "Bear! bear! More bear!"
i am proud to say i haven't had one bite of it
am i a bad mom for buying it?

okay, this next item is just wrong
"pirate smiley balls"
great.
they are little baloney balls the size of a quater
with smiling pirates on them
the perfect size for CHOKING
nein, danke!

this isn't so exciting
but i thought you might find it interesting
that the mayo and mustard
comes in toothpaste like tubes...
no big tubs of best foods for us!

we eat a lot of bread, butter, cheese & meats
not so thrilling but that's what you do here...
but it tastes pretty good on those fresh rolls
these are the staples for drinks in our fridge:
milk (does a body good?)
mineral water (believe it or not, all four of us
actually prefer this now over regular water
are we euros or what!?)
coke--a lil taste of home now and then
apfelschorle: which is the hip thing to drink here
like sparkling apple cider but with less sugar
and of course always juice for the kinder
the biggest change to our diet here has been
CHOCOLATE
chocolate
& more chocolate
the chocolate here is goooood
cheap, tasty, a zillion kinds
even spreadable, as you can see above
slather it on one of those warm rolls...trouble!

i will end this food frenzy
with our favorite, typical german
home cooked meal...
yes, it's bratwurst & sauerkraut
with some fresh bread and mustard for dipping
i have to admit, we feel very german
making it & delighting in it
and this is just what we'll make YOU
if you come to visit
right, rachel? ;)
hope you enjoyed a taste of hamburg
oh ya, and as for hamburgers in hamburg ;)
let's just say our german friends
need to stick with what they do best: sausage
leave the hamburgers to the good ol u.s. of a.
love to you all,
krista

Very fun post! I love your fruit and bread basket o'plenty! I would grab something out of there! I would not, however, touch the Nutella. That is sick in any language!!!

It was fun to see the gallery of typical German fare :) The bologna balls were especially interesting and worrisome! Do you ever have spetze (cola+orange)? My brother in law, who lives in Augsburg, drinks that all the time. Our favorite German meal is also bratwurst mit sauerkraut!
It's amazing to see how Jose and Grace have grown! They are adorable. Any more news on renting out the bar?
